A new book, Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism, by former Meta employee Sarah Wynn-Williams has become an instant bestseller. The memoir details alleged “cruel” behavior by Mark Zuckerberg and other key executives. Meta has fiercely denied the claims and is taking legal action to suppress the book.

Sarah Wynn-Williams, a former director of global public policy at Meta, has released a memoir exposing the company’s allegedly toxic work environment. According to her, Mark Zuckerberg, Joel Kapla, and Sheryl Sandberg engaged in “cruel and disturbing behavior.” She also highlights Zuckerberg’s controversial attempts to win favor with Chinese government officials.

Despite being announced just days before its release, the book has skyrocketed to fourth place on Amazon’s bestseller list. Meta, however, strongly denies the accusations, calling the book “a mix of outdated and previously reported claims” and arguing it should “never have been published.”

Meta claims that Wynn-Williams violated a non-disparagement agreement she signed upon leaving the company. As a result, arbitrator Nicholas A. Gowen has ruled that she cannot personally promote the book, though her publisher, Flatiron Books, can continue marketing it. Flatiron has pushed back against Meta’s tactics, stating it is committed to publishing important works like this.

Additionally, Meta has attempted to influence media coverage of the book. Ron Charles of The Washington Post revealed that in his 27 years of reviewing and editing books, no company has ever pressured him the way Meta has. This controversy is not the first time Meta has faced criticism from former employees—ex-Facebook moderators have previously spoken out about the traumatizing content they had to review while on the job.
